Al Jazeera is a global news network that was started in 1996 by Hamad bin Kalif Al Tani. Al Jazeera originated in Qatar and their broadcast lasted for six hours and were completely in Arabic. It was originally the first independent news channel in the Arab world but now Al Jazeera currently caters to over 100 countries. It was able to cater to many who sought after news that was not controlled by the government. Not only that but they have 12 bureaus throughout the United States. Their staff is made up of people of many different nationalities so that people of different walks of life can be represented. Recently they have launched Al Jazeera English in 2006 to cater to other parts of the world. Al Jazeera means 'peninsula' and the news channel has won many awards. This includes the Emmys, the Gracies, the Peabody's, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt award.
Al Jazeera is known for being one of the few news sites in the Middle East that did not criticize other Arab regimes. Although, there has been a significant lack of propaganda in Al Jazeera the news site has been criticized by the West. Some US officials believe that the site is anti-west and others in the UK claim that it is a 'mouthpiece' for terrorist groups. |
